  • step.01 Culture Station Seoul 284

The first Seoul Station built near Yeomcheongyo(Bridge) in 1900 was a timber building with area of 10 pyeong (around 33 square meter). At that time its name was ‘Namdaemun Station’, built to provide goods to the central part of Gyeongseong (Seoul). The Seoul Station (Gyeongseong Station) was rebuilt at the current place in 1925. Large and showy Seoul Station built in eclecticism style of the 19th century was the second-largest one after Tokyo Station in Asia. Like the here in the novel «Wing» written by Lee Sang, many young people used to meet people and to drink tea in the station. A new station building was established in 2004 and the old one is used as a complex cultural space with the name of ‘Culture Station Seoul 284’.

  • step.03 Square Garden

A garden between the Seoul Square building you can see first after getting off the train at Seoul Staion and the Namdaemun Church behind it was named Square Garden by the Seoul City. At that time when Mr. Kim Hyeon-ok, the former mayor started his term, the Seoul Square Building was built as the Transportation Information Center. But the building was acquired by Daewoo Construction after its fire to become the Daewoo Building. Daewoo Group went through continuous high growth and started buying the lands around the Daewoo Building as if making a Daewoo Kingdom there. However, Daewoo could not buy the land of Namdaemun Church and agreed to use the garden of the church together after tearing down the walls between them.

  • step.04 Son Kee Chung Athletic Park

Son Kee Chung Athletic Park was established on the land where Yangchung High School, Son’s alma mater, had been placed. In the middle of a place which used to be the school playground was planted a giant oak tree which was awarded to Son Kee Chung instead of a laurel tree, which was grown only in the Mediterranean region, to commemorate his winning in the Berlin Olympic marathon in 1936. There are physical training facilities for the residents, cultural facilities, memorial hall, etc. which were made by repairing the existing school buildings. Visit the Son Kee Chung Athletic Park opened to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of his birth to get more detailed information.
